Breakthrough fast-measurement technology cuts particle-size and zeta-potential analysis from three minutes to under 20 seconds, enabling online process control
Press Release
Download PDFPONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL. Colloidal Dynamics LLC (“CD”) today announced that it has entered into a technology-transfer agreement with Nippon Coke & Engineering Co., Ltd. (“NCE”), a Tokyo-listed manufacturer of powder-processing equipment and plants. Under the agreement, executed in June 2026, CD transferred the intellectual property, manufacturing technology, and sales rights for its AcoustoSizer product line to NCE.
The AcoustoSizer measures particle size distribution and zeta potential in concentrated suspensions using electroacoustic and ultrasonic attenuation methods. Over the past two years, CD has developed proprietary signal-processing technology, AcoustoSizer Fast Measurement (AS-FM), that reduces measurement time from approximately three minutes to less than 20 seconds. The shorter cycle enables real-time monitoring of particle-processing operations that previously could be characterized only offline.
CD and NCE are jointly developing the AcoustoSizer Grinding Monitor (AGM), based on the AS-FM technology. When integrated with a bead mill, the AGM provides continuous measurement of particle size and zeta potential during grinding so that process conditions can be adjusted in real time. NCE plans to market the AGM worldwide as an evolution of the AcoustoSizer, offering both offline laboratory and online process-optimization solutions.
Demand for tighter control of ultrafine grinding is strong in electronic components, batteries, pharmaceuticals, paints and coatings, and related industries. NCE, which manufactures ultrafine grinding machines in addition to blast-furnace coke, identified AS-FM as a complementary technology for its powder-processing portfolio.
CD is discontinuing manufacture and sale of the current AcoustoSizer IIx. The company will fulfill existing backlog orders, honor current warranties through expiration, and provide support, repair services, and spare parts for the AcoustoSizer IIx through December 31, 2027. After that date NCE will provide spare parts and support. CD and NCE are discussing upgrade paths so that existing AcoustoSizer IIx customers can transition to AS-FM technology when the AGM enters commercial shipment.
The Colloidal Dynamics ZetaProbe product line is unaffected. CD will continue to manufacture, sell, and support the ZetaProbe and expects new software and other improvements within the next 12 months.
NCE, formerly Mitsui Mining Co., Ltd., has a 137-year history and is listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The company manufactures coke for blast-furnace steelmaking and is one of Japan’s leading suppliers of powder-processing equipment and plants, with operations in Japan, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Approximate figures: capital of 7 billion yen, annual sales of 91.3 billion yen, and 983 employees. Headquarters: Tokyo. Website: https://www.n-coke.com/en
Colloidal Dynamics LLC develops and manufactures laboratory instruments that measure particle size distribution and zeta potential of colloidal particles using electroacoustic and ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy. Materials are measured at high concentrations without dilution. Applications include semiconductor CMP slurries, ceramic and catalyst-support materials, pigments, clays and mineral slurries, electronic inks, and battery materials. The company is based in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
“Richard O’Brien and I are excited to be collaborating once again to launch the next generation of our AcoustoSizer technology that we began developing more than 40 years ago,” said Dave Cannon, CEO and Managing Member of Colloidal Dynamics LLC. “The AS Fast Measurement method opens applications that could not previously be addressed. Partnering with NCE puts this technology in the hands of a global powder-processing equipment company that can take it into grinding operations worldwide.”
